Hsinchu, Feb. 15, 2011 - Billions of mobile subscribers worldwide still use GSM technology for phone calls, messaging, and basic Internet access. The MTI Labs next generation Dynamic DPD (DDPDR) solution for WCDMA and LTE – released today – is a critical technological enabler, allowing in the future mobile network suppliers to include legacy GSM into their multi-standard broadband radio solution.

"We believe that our Dynamic DPD will allow radio network suppliers to effectively incorporate GSM into multi-standard radio head solutions. This will in turn offer a smooth upgrade path for the many mobile operators that are still gradually moving from GSM through WCDMA to LTE," says Wilhelm Heger, Senior VP of Product and Business Development at MTI Labs.

Incorporating GSM-capability into multi-standard RAN has up until now been difficult, because separation of several narrow band GSM carriers in a single broadband device – such as a GSM/WCDMA/LTE multi-standard remote radio head – has posed a significant a challenge. Adding to the complications has been the widespread use of GSM frequency hopping. The new MTI Labs Dynamic DPD solution enables the quick development of multi-carrier GSM/WCDMA/LTE radio heads complying with both Class 1 and Class 2 GSM requirements for the adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR).

The MTI Labs Dynamic DPD solution uses super fast closed control loop to shape and pre-distort every GSM timeslot. This linearizes radio head RF output to the extent that the GSM standards requirements are met even when using frequency hopping. The solution has been tested and verified in the lab. Dynamic DPD with GSM is expected to be implemented on a chip later this year and will be used in MTI’s own radio head products.
